Vineyards of Catan is a variation on Settlers of Catan by John Tantalo and Chris Radcliff.

Contents

Requirements

  • a standard set of Settlers
  • 2-3 vineyard hex tiles
  • 20-30 wine resource cards

Rules

A vineyard tile is like any other resource-producing hex. Its products are wine cards. Wine cards may be traded with other players or used to bribe the port master. In a port bribe, one or more wine cards can take the place of any other resource that would be part of the port trade. However, at least one non-wine card must be used in any port bribe. The port master cannot feed his children wine.

Wine resources act like any other resource: wine contributes to a player's 7-card limit, can be monopolized, are eligible for year-of-plenty, can be stolen by other players moving the robber.

These rules also apply to 4-to-1 bank trades; just think of them as port trades.

Examples

  • 3 sheep and 1 wine may be traded for a wood with the bank.
  • 1 wood and 2 wine may be traded for an ore at a 3-to-1 port.
  • 1 wheat and 1 wine may be traded for a brick at a 2-to-1 wheat port.

Possible Variations

  • Only one wine can be used per trade.
  • Wine cannot be used in 4-to-1 trades.
  • A whole trade can consist of wine cards, e.g., 2 wine for a brick at a 2-to-1 port.
